Recent statistics indicate that over 150 million Americans are missing at least one tooth. This issue is not just a dental or cosmetic one. When a tooth is missing, the bone deteriorates. That deterioration often causes a sunken-face look, which makes an uneven or poor smile look even worse. Furthermore, a missing tooth creates more pressure on the other teeth. So, there is a higher risk for additional tooth loss or other oral health problems.
In the past, a Rochester cosmetic dentist could only offer dentures. Although dental implants were available as early as the 1970s, they were not an option for most people until the 1990s.
Current developments in implant construction and procedures give Rochester cosmetic dentists an additional tool to not only improve your smile but also improve your overall health.
What are Dental Implants?
Unlike dentures or bridges, dental implants replace the entire tooth, as opposed to only the crown (visible part of the tooth). Dr. Zahavi uses a titanium post to replace the tooth root. An abutment on the top of the artificial root holds the crown in place. Dr. Zahavi’s laboratory expertly constructs the crown, so it matches your natural teeth in terms of shape and color.
The procedure begins with the titanium rod. Within a few weeks to months, the bone grows around the post. This osseointegration not only strengthens the rod enough to support the crown. It also prevents the aforementioned sunken jaw look. So, in most cases, a dental implant gives the patient a facelift in addition to a prettier smile and a healthier mouth.
In most cases, dental implants are permanent. Once osseointegration is complete, only tooth extraction reverses the process.
Am I a Good Candidate for This Procedure?
Most Rochester cosmetic dentists highly recommend dental implants because most people are good candidates for this permanent solution.
Typically, people who are in good general health and recently lost a tooth are excellent candidates for dental implants. If the patient does not have enough bone mass in the jaw to support the titanium post, Dr. Zahavi must use bone graft material to build more bone tissue in the jaw. Lack of bone mass is especially common if the patient’s tooth has been missing for more than a few months.
Dr. Zahavi always carefully goes over any concerns with each patient because every patient is different.
